A pleasant town with a shingle beach, Inverbervie is a coastal community that was once a fishing village. The relentless action of the tide resulted in the formation of a gravel bar which blocked the harbour, causing fishermen to relocate to Gourdon. Today, the gravel bar also blocks the entrance to the River Bervie. This is removed by dredging a number of times throughout the year to ensure that salmon and sea trout can travel upstream from the sea.
Inverbervie is also home Nannie of the Cutty Sark who features in Robert Burn’s poem Tam o’ Shanter. The Grassic Gibbon Centre located to the North West of Inverbervie is a museum dedicated to the life and works of Lewis Grassic Gibbon, author of the novels Sunset Song, Cloude Howe and Grey Granite.
