Sea Surface Temperatures (SST)
In June 2023, Radio 4 and other media reported some of alarming new observations concerning Sea Surface Temperatures that are monitored from space. The news item was 19th June 2023, and most notable for us in the North East were the observations of SST and SST anomalies (for this time of year) stretching from approximately Durham to Aberdeen. A short section was devoted to this in the Summer Issue of the EGCP E-Newsletter. To illustrate, some visual information taken from the SST website for the nearest date for available data - 17th June 2022 and 17th June 2023 was used for comparison. The keys for both the UK area insets are the same as for the actual SSTs - first animation - and the SST anomalies - second animation. The images below are simply screen grabs from the website pages, but unlike the E-Newsletter, also include some 30-day animations to show the development of the current (2023) patterns for the SST and anomalies.
Watch the 30-day animations (.gif) below for the SST and SST anomalies leading up to June 17th 2023
