Walking is a great way to explore the East Grampian Coast. Paths along the coast provide opportunities to see the sights, watch for wildlife and enjoy the outdoors. There is a range of short and longer distance routes from which to choose.
Walking Routes

Walk Highlands
This excellent website provides in depth information on walks including photographs, free maps and GPS waypoints. You can browse walks or search by location.
Walking in Scotland
The official walking site of Visit Scotland, the country’s national tourism organisation. Information is available on a variety of walks including details such as difficulty, accessibility and whether walks are suitable for families with children.
Long Distance Routes
The Grampian coastline includes paths which are part of a wider network of paths which form the North Sea Trail walking route. The route connects areas around the North Sea, running through Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and England.
Maps and guides for the Aberdeenshire route are available online from Aberdeenshire Council. You can also pick up a paper guide with maps from your local Visitor Information Centre.
Accessible Routes
Some local paths are suitable for people with mobility difficulties. Walking in Scotland has information on access opportunities for people with mobility difficulties. Their walks database also indicates routes which are suitable for wheelchair users.

Useful Tips for Walkers
- Make sure you know where you are going and where to get help if you need it
- Carry a mobile phone for in case of emergency
- Keep well away from cliff edges
- Wear stout, sturdy footwear
- Wear appropriate clothing such as fleece, rain jacket and trousers that will dry quickly if they get wet
- Check the weather forecast before you go (remember the weather can change very quickly in Scotland!
